Morning Cup of Joe?
Can you imagine changing your morning “cup of joe” from coffee to bone broth? I know for some people this sounds impossible to give up their coffee, but it’s no problem for me because I don’t drink coffee. Never have. When my girls were babies and I was exhausted all the time, Todd suggested I try it. I drank one sip, hated it and have never tried it again.
Most people are disgusted when I tell them I drink bone broth, while others are extremely intrigued. I can tell you this—it is one of the things that allows me to feel my best. There are times I get out of the habit of drinking it and my body can tell. I am absolutely certain that drinking bone broth daily helps keep me closer to my goal of optimal health. If you’re unfamiliar, there are many benefits to drinking bone broth, including but not limited to:
- Protect against leaky gut
- Overcome food intolerances and allergies
- Improve joint health
- Reduce cellulite (still waiting for this one to happen)
- Boost immune system
- Improve skin health
Any time I mention drinking bone broth, I have people ask how I make mine. While years ago I made mine on a regular basis, I don’t do that anymore. Here’s how I get in my daily bone broth:
- Kettle and Fire Chicken Bone Broth
- Kettle and Fire Beef Bone Broth
- Ancient Nutrition Chocolate Bone Broth in a smoothie
But, if you’d rather, you can certainly make bone broth on your own. I did for many years!
First, you will need to purchase some bones. You can use chicken bones if you like, but I prefer beef bones. I got mine online from Greensbury because they are organic, grass-fed beef bones. You can also purchase these from Kroger or Food Lion, but they likely are not the organic, grass-fed bones.
Roast the bones on a baking sheet at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes until they have browned a bit. This removes any impurities from the bones and helps bring out the nutrients. Place the cooked bones in your crock pot.
Important: You then need to add a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar. Notice on the bottle it says “With The ‘Mother'”. You’ll need to make sure yours has it! This helps pull important nutrients from the bones.
Throw in some celery, carrots, onion (not pictured – I cannot have onion, but if I could I would add it at this point). No need to wash or clean your veggies – just throw them in as is! Next add some sea salt. Add enough water to cover the bones.
Let the bones cook on low in the crock pot for 24 hours.
When it’s done, let your crock pot cool down a bit. Pour the stock through a strainer into another pot to collect the bones and bits
Transfer to a pitcher and let the bone broth cool in the refrigerator overnight. The fat will separate to the top for removal. The majority of it will come out in one big piece. Remove the remaining fat with a straining spoon. Pour some broth in a microwave-safe cup. Heat in the microwave for about 90 seconds and then enjoy.
Bone broth is obviously not the most exciting and delicious thing you’ll ever drink – it definitely is no chocolate milkshake or morning cup of coffee. But, it is much healthier and has so many wonderful benefits.
I hope this helps all of you that have been asking how I make my bone broth. Let me know if you try it!
Cheers,
Diana
